The latest limited edition from The Macallan pays tribute to its founder and the standards of excellence he established
Scottish distillery The Macallan has unveiled its latest limited edition, Tales of The Macallan Volume II – part of a remarkable series of rare single malt whiskies that tell the stories of the brand’s pioneers and their legacy. The second volume pays homage to Alexander Reid, the founder of The Macallan, highlighting his story and the standards of craftsmanship excellence that he set – standards that have been passed down through generations and remain upheld to this day. Distilled in 1949 and bottled in 2022, Tales of The Macallan Volume II is limited to only 344 bottles – one of which proudly belongs to a Bulgarian collector.
Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker for The Macallan, said: “Tales of The Macallan Volume II is a tribute to our founder Alexander Reid, whose commitment to quality and craftsmanship established the pursuit of uncompromised excellence that has continued to guide successive generations of The Macallan’s whisky makers, like myself, to this day. Displaying beautiful tones of bronzed oak, and subtle red hues that reflect the original meaning of Alexander Reid’s surname in Scots – The Red One – this rare and unique single malt whisky possesses an incredible complexity achieved through age and patient maturation. With its long, smoky note reminiscent of whiskies from Alexander’s era, it is a worthy homage to his legacy, which lives on as we celebrate our 200th anniversary.”
Fascinated by the alchemy of distillation that transforms barley into whisky, Alexander established The Macallan distillery at Easter Elchies Estate in Speyside, Scotland, in 1824. He championed core production principles, believing that smaller stills produced better flavour and character. Alexander rejected larger, high-output stills, valuing patience in pursuit of the unparalleled quality for which The Macallan remains renowned today.
Tales of The Macallan Volume II is housed in a specially crafted Lalique crystal decanter, concealed within an exquisite almanac. Each chapter of the book tells the story of founder Alexander Reid and features stunning illustrations by British illustrator Andrew Davidson, known for his traditional wood engravings. For the unique packaging, The Macallan collaborated with masters of crystal, leather, and paper. Long-standing partner Lalique, the French crystal maker, created the flawless decanter featuring engraved illustrations of Alexander as a teacher, farmer, and distiller. Traditional London bookbinders Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf – specialists in fine bookbinding and restoration – crafted the unique handmade Tales of The Macallan Volume II book, which required exceptional technical skill to conceal the decanter within its 800 pages. French printer Imprimerie du Marais, renowned for luxury printing on specialty paper and inks, printed each page with utmost precision.
To celebrate the launch of Tales of The Macallan Volume II, a unique zoetrope-style animated video was created, bringing Alexander Reid’s story to life through Andrew Davidson’s illustrations, set to an original composition by Scottish composer Craig Armstrong – a modern folk-inspired piece evoking Scotland’s landscape and heritage.
