  1. INTRODUCTION

A unique French herbal liqueur that has been produced since the 16th century. Its creation is associated with the Benedictine monks of the Fecamp Abbey in Normandy (1789). In 1863, the recipe was accidentally discovered by Alexandre Le Grand in old manuscripts. Since then, it has been a closely guarded trade secret.

The rich aroma of the drink comes from 27 flowers, berries, herbs, roots, and spices that are macerated in alcohol for several months. This is followed by a process of slow distillation in copper stills. Honey is added to the resulting alcohol distillates, and they are left to age in oak barrels for 2-3 years under controlled humidity and temperature.

At the next stage, 4 different distillates are blended in precise proportions, after which the product is filtered. It is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.

The taste is sweet, rich, with dominant notes of honey and spices.

The bottle has a distinctive design with a label that reads "D.O.M.", an abbreviation of the Latin "Deo Optimo Maximo" (To God, the Best, the Greatest). Due to the many counterfeits that appeared in the 19th century, the manufacturer added a special seal.

Even today, the original Bénédictine is produced only in the town of Fécamp, Normandy.

It is consumed as a digestif, with ice, or as a base for cocktails. It is also suitable with coffee, as an addition to crème brûlée, or a scoop of ice cream.
