Nearly 200 trees were planted in Sofia by volunteers from the Coca-Cola System

Nearly 200 new broadleaf and coniferous trees were planted by employees from the Coca-Cola System in Bulgaria who joined the spring afforestation campaign of Sofia Municipality.

The trees will provide a source of delight for residents and guests of Sofia. Over 200 volunteers planted trees donated by companies within the Coca-Cola System in inter-block spaces in the neighborhoods of "Sveta Troitsa" and "Bakston," as part of the municipality's initiative "Forest in the Neighborhood", as well as in the largest parks in Sofia. Afforestation and park ground renewal were carried out in the green areas around the National Palace of Culture (NDK), South Park, “Geo Milev” Park, and “Sveta Troitsa” Park and the volunteers were joined by Nadezhda Bobcheva, Deputy Mayor for "Green System, ecology and land use" of Sofia Municipality.

The donated and planted trees comprise over 10 species, including magnolia, Southern catalpa, red oak, red-leaf plum, and maple. The selection of plant species and their size (over 2 meters) have been agreed upon with the Sofia Municipality “Green System” and “Environment” Directorates and meet the needs of the respective locations. 

Actions on afforestation and renewal of forest and park grounds are part of the long-standing volunteer program of the Coca-Cola System in Bulgaria “My Green City”. This year it marked its 17^th edition.

The “My Green City” initiative is being held in support of Coca-Cola's global commitments to achieve the equivalent of 100% collection and recycling of every bottle or can sold by the company by 2030, and to become a carbon-neutral company by 2040.

As part of the previous editions of the campaign, the Coca-Cola team managed to landscape, clean, and improve several localities, forest spaces, and parks in our country. In their previous volunteer actions, the employees planted more than 7 acres of forests, collected tonnes of waste from dozens of locations in the country, cleaned more than 30 km of coastal areas, transformed 10 public transport stops in Sofia into plastic collection containers and supported other public benefits initiatives.

Within the framework of “My Green City” every year different locations and causes are selected where the work of volunteers is necessary and useful in the overall care of the environment.  In the past year alone, 7 locations across the country were cleaned up, with 3.5 tons of plastic, paper, glass, metal and textile waste collected separately and handed over for recycling. Simultaneously, the volunteers from the Coca-Cola team planted over 60 trees in Sofia and Plovdiv.
