The Macallan Introduces The Tree of Life Limited Collection in Bulgaria, Celebrating the Legacy of Visionary Scottish Artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Two exclusive single malt whiskies bring together The Macallan’s craftsmanship and art in a celebration of the natural world

The Macallan introduces two new whiskies in Bulgaria, inspired by artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his connection with nature. The collection comprises The Tree of Life, a 46-year-old single malt intertwining the legacies of The Macallan and Mackintosh, and Art is the Flower, a whisky celebrating the beauty of nature and the cycle of life. Both expressions have been crafted with exceptional attention to detail and draw inspiration from Mackintosh’s iconic 1902 stained-glass panel, „The Spirit of the Rose“.

“The Macallan and Charles Rennie Mackintosh share a reverence for nature, a guiding force in artistry and craftsmanship and this is showcased within the Tree of Life by The Macallan across both releases. We have been able to take inspiration from Mackintosh’s idiosyncratic depictions of nature and reflect this in the exemplary art of whisky making, creating two exceptional new whisky releases,” commented Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at The Macallan.

The rarer of the two expressions, The Tree of Life by The Macallan, is a 46-year-old single malt Scotch whisky matured for decades in two sherry-seasoned oak casks from 1979. Its age of 46 years carries special significance: Mackintosh was 46 when he stepped away from architecture for a period, reconnected with nature and created some of his most significant works. The Tree of Life will be available in just 112 decanters worldwide. Each bottle is crafted from Lalique crystal and finished with a rose-shaped crystal stopper inspired by „The Spirit of the Rose“. The whisky is encased in a sculptural structure that references the distinctive metalwork found throughout Mackintosh’s architecture.

“This exceptional 46 Years Old single malt, selected to mark the age that Mackintosh reconnected with nature, offers a unique, vibrant and complex expression of The Macallan matured in sherry seasoned oak casks. Tropical fruits charred over smouldering peat embers are balanced with complex wood spice. Notes of antique oak are characteristic of higher aged expressions from The Macallan and evoke Mackintosh’s unique designs crafted from wood, in Scotland, many years ago,” said Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker at The Macallan.

The second expression in the collection, The Macallan Art is the Flower, is a single malt Scotch whisky inspired by the way Mackintosh portrayed nature in his art, and particularly by „The Spirit of the Rose“. The whisky takes its name from a 1902 lecture by Mackintosh that begins with these words and explores the relationship between art, nature and the human soul. Maturation in sherry-seasoned European oak casks gives the whisky its rich colour and natural notes of raisins, figs, cherries, almonds and polished oak.

The Tree of Life Collection continues The Macallan’s longstanding relationship with the world of art, this time through the legacy of one of Scotland’s most recognizable creative figures. The collection highlights the shared inspiration that Mackintosh and The Macallan’s whisky makers find in nature, transforming this connection into a contemporary interpretation of Scotland’s cultural heritage.
