The Macallan Unveiled The Tree of Life Collection in Bulgaria with an Exclusive Event Celebrating Nature and the Art of Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The Macallan marked the end of September with the official launch of The Tree of Life Collection in Bulgaria, bringing together two limited-edition expressions – The Tree of Life and Art is the Flower. The collection was unveiled at an exclusive private event at MONUMENT Gallery in Sofia, bringing together a selected group of key partners and whisky enthusiasts and immersing them in the world of nature, art and craftsmanship at the heart of the collection. The event concept followed the symbolic journey of nature as a source of inspiration and a reference to the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The world of the two expressions was brought to life through visual art, gastronomy, and whisky tasting, reflecting the distinctive way in which the Scottish visionary interpreted nature.

The philosophy behind the collection and the creative connection between The Macallan and Mackintosh’s legacy were presented by Ivelina Dimitrova, Brand Manager for The Macallan at Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria, and Dimitar Dimitrov, Regional Brand Specialist at Edrington. Guests were welcomed with signature cocktail, followed by a specially created four-course menu paired with selected expressions from The Macallan portfolio. The highlight of the evening was a special presentation and guided tasting of The Macallan Art is the Flower, led by Dimitar Dimitrov. Guests learned more about the story of the limited edition, the craftsmanship behind its creation, its tasting profile, and the intertwining legacies of The Macallan and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, both deeply rooted in nature. One of the most anticipated moments was the official unveiling of The Tree of Life decanter, which guests had the opportunity to admire up close and discover more about the story behind its creation.

Commenting on the creation of the collection, Stuart Robertson, Director of The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, commented: “Mackintosh had a unique style that continues to influence artisans and global projects even today, and The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society was delighted to collaborate with The Macallan on this new collection – a true collaboration of art, whisky and poetry, inspired by The Spirit of the Rose.”

At the heart of the collection is The Tree of Life by The Macallan, a 46-year-old single malt Scotch whisky matured for decades in two sherry-seasoned oak casks from 1979. The release is limited to just 112 decanters worldwide. Each is crafted from Lalique crystal and finished rose-shaped crystal stopper inspired by Mackintosh’s iconic stained-glass panel, “The Spirit of the Rose”.

The second expression in the collection, The Macallan Art is the Flower, is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky inspired by the way Mackintosh portrayed nature in his art, and particularly by „The Spirit of the Rose”. Maturation in sherry-seasoned European oak casks gives the whisky natural notes of raisins, figs, cherries, almonds and polished oak, reflecting the craftsmanship and attention to detail that define The Macallan.

Speaking about the creative process behind the two expressions, Steven Bremner, Whiskymaker at The Macallan, said: “To truly capture a spirit that depicts Mackintosh’s essence and inspiration, we had to draw upon our own artistry. We had the freedom to tap into our entire inventory, identifying casks that have reached their peak maturation, which added an extra layer of character and complexity. European oak was key as it delivers beautiful oak notes, spices and dried fruit, but crucially also delicate notes of fruits that bear their own blossoms.”

The launch of The Tree of Life in Bulgaria once again highlighted The Macallan’s commitment to bringing together traditional whisky craftsmanship with art, culture and contemporary luxury. The limited-edition collection is available on www.themacallan.com, and the expressions are also available on the Bulgarian market through Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria, the official distributor of The Macallan in the country.
